Natalie’s First Sleepover

On August 24, Natalie’s best friend Clara slept at our house while her parents were in the hospital having Clara’s little sister Katie. Natalie was very excited to have Clara sleep in her room, and we decided to let them, warning them that if they didn’t go right to sleep, we might have to put them in separate rooms. They were angels!! No talking or stalling bedtime, they went right to sleep, and both stayed asleep until the morning—that’s better than Natalie does by herself most nights!

Here we are reading bedtime stories:

Clara and Natalie saying goodnight:
Say "good night!"

We couldn’t resist peaking at them in the middle of the night. This is why we’re trying not to let Natalie sleep in our bed anymore—she’s such a bed hog!!

Natalie’s First Haircut

Well, technically, the first time scissors touched Natalie’s hair was when we finally cut off her rattail when she was about 17 months old.

On August 6, 2009, Natalie was 2 years and 8 months old and we decided it was time for the real deal. We went to a local kids’ barber called Snip-its. At first, Natalie was a little scared and refused to sit in the chair, so the hairdresser had her sit in my lap. Then a lollipop helped her feel a little braver and she sat in the chair at the end so the hair dresser could get the ends straight.

Starting out on Mama's lap

Fear is no match for a lollipop!

Getting the cut even

Where's your bellybutton?

With proud mama!

She did it!!!

Scary, Then Sweet

I nearly lost Natalie in Marshall’s this morning. That is to say, I couldn’t find her for what seemed like an eternity, but was probably no longer than 3 minutes. One second, she was right there, playing with a toy on display, and the next she was no where in sight. I quickly looked up and down all the aisles near me in either direction, all the while calling, “Natalie?? NATALIE!! NATALIE??” A couple of women around me understood the situation and started looking too. I was starting to seriously panic and just at the point where I was going to run to front and ask the management for a Code Adam Alert, one of the other women found her.

"Where's Natalie?"

By the time I got to her, we were both visibly upset, shaking, and near tears. I gave Natalie probably the tightest hug she’s ever gotten. She looked at me and said in a very sad and scared voice, “I wanted to be where someone loved me best of all.”

If she only knew….

"Here I am!!"

Oh, and I’m breaking out the leash again.

Big Sister Natalie!

Faithful readers may have noticed that we haven’t updated the blog in quite a while. There are lots of posts I’ve written in my head that have yet to be typed or published, and I hope to get to them soon. The biggest news you probably already know is that Natalie will be a big sister in February 2010!!! The fatigue of pregnancy has led me to go to bed pretty early every night, which has eaten into my usual blogging time after Natalie goes to bed. Natalie has taken well to the news and seems to comprehend the changes that are about to happen in our family. Luckily, she has lots of friends who already have recently acquired younger siblings, so the concept isn’t totally foreign.

We recently learned the new baby’s gender, but I’ll let Natalie tell you, if you haven’t already heard. Judging from this video, I think Natalie will be an awesome big sister. Of course, it will be a transition and we’re prepared for it to be challenging in ways that we can’t even begin to anticipate. We will likely be making some changes to the blog so that it reflects our whole family.

So, without further ado, listen to Natalie’s announcement about the gender of her new sibling:
