Four Month Check-Up

We saw the pediatrician this morning for Natalie’s 4 month well-baby visit. She is now 26.75 inches and 15 pounds, 11 ounces. That’s the 90th percentile for weight and she’s “off the charts” for height!!!

The doctor was impressed by Natalie’s head control and to see her doing her stomach “crunches.” Dr Labian said crunches are a 9 month skill! Given this, the Dr. thought that Natalie might be developmentally ready to start trying some solid foods. Nutritionally Natalie is getting all that she needs from breast milk, so starting solid foods would be more to develop the muscles needed to chew. The doctor said developing these muscles is important in terms of speech development, too. Who knew? We’re going to follow the doctor’s recommendation and watch for Natalie to give us cues that she is ready, including looking interested in the food adults eat.

We feel very lucky to have such a healthy daughter!

Since she now is 4 months old, Natalie is mature enough to use her exersaucer! Natalie was unsure about the exersaucer at first, but now likes it a lot. It’s great to put her in it while we cook dinner. Thank you, Vivian & Richard for handing the exersaucer down to us!

New Tricks!

Natalie is not a trained monkey, but she does have some new tricks. Sometimes we’re lucky enough to catch them on camera. She has now rolled over in both directions! The first time she rolled from her back to her tummy, I missed it—I went into the kitchen for a minute and when I came back, she was on her belly! Since then she’s done it in my presence and Nama witnessed it too. She just needs to roll over for Daddy so he can see it! And in front of the video camera…

Here she is trying to sit up. She does these “crunches” every day. Check out her abs!

Grabbing her toes in this shot, which is really cute, but makes diapering her a little more difficult!

We all love her new Imse Vimse (that’s Swedish for “itsy bitsy”) diaper covers, from Momma Commune Boutique:

Unbelievable…

“It seemed to me that in the first year, just as you had things ‘figured out’ they would go and switch things around on you!” – Aunt Nancy, who wrote this to me in an email after my “Sleep” post.

Boy is Aunt Nancy right! Poor Natalie has been teething (I can see a little white spot poking through her bottom gum) and she was pretty miserable on Tuesday. She’s been rejecting the pacifier since she was about 6 weeks old, but I decided to try giving it to her because she was hurting her fingers she was biting them so hard. Much to my surprise, she took it! I am so grateful to have another way to soothe her.

Okay, here’s the really unbelievable part…after all our troubles with sleep, I actually put Natalie in her crib fully awake last night, she fell asleep on her own and slept for 4 hours! I had nursed her, and she looked like she was going to fall asleep at one point, but didn’t. Purely as an experiment, I put her in the crib with her pacifier, expecting that she would cry as she always did before when I put her in the crib awake. I was truly shocked that she got to sleep on her own!
